New Year in Southern Spain

At the Costa Calida, the New Year is welcomed with many festivals. New Year’s Eve is for most people a family event. Locals gather at home to celebrate the New Year. Families enjoy homemade tapas or snacks from the local shops. For example, Busquets, the bakery around the corner, is often visited for a special treat.

Three Kings in Cabo de Palos

The Spanish finalize the Christmas period by celebrating Three Kings. On the 5th of January, the three Wise Men arrive to town. In Cartagena, they arrive by boat and they will pay a visit to the young born child. At night, the Three Kings parade through the city centre. During their tour they enlighten the crowd with an array of sweets (6,000 kilos) and toys (18,000 pieces)! However, this festival is not only for children. Families and friends go out to eat and enjoy the local cuisine. The special Three Kings bread from the bakery, filled with cream and sweets, is one of our favorite Spanish treats.

Costa Calida in Winter Time

The first month of the New Year is normally a time associated with cold and rather short days. However, this is definitely not the case for the Costa Calida. Here, days are full of sun and afternoons with temperatures around 18-20 degrees Celsius are not uncommon. Consequently, these are perfect conditions for reading a book on the beautiful rooftop terrace of Villa Pastorale.
